Max Halley Young

Max Halley Young (known to all as Hal), age 91, returned to his Heavenly Father and his beloved wife on August 25, 2026, in Lehi, Utah. Hal was born December 2, 1934, in Abraham, Utah, to Alva Allen and Emily Margret Petersen Young. He was the middle of five children and grew up on an idyllic rural farm. His childhood was spent in the yard playing baseball, working on the family farm, raising crops, and riding horses during cattle drives to round up livestock from the family's summer and winter ranches. He carried fond memories of those early years on the farm with his siblings. He loved baseball and took great pride in playing pitcher for the Hinckley High School baseball team.

At age 19, Hal answered the call to serve a full-time, two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Western Canadian Mission. Upon returning, he attended Utah State University and Brigham Young University with a dream of becoming an English teacher. He also proudly served his country in the Utah Air National Guard as an aircraft electrician.

He married his childhood friend and the love of his life, Velma “Marie” Bushnell, on June 24, 1960, in the Manti LDS Temple. Together, they raised 10 wonderful children who were their entire world. His loving wife Marie preceded him in death in 2015.

Hal later returned home to operate his own large farm, cattle ranch, and feedlot, where he raised alfalfa, corn, wheat and other various crops. As a devoted and hard working father, he also worked at the Brush Wellman Mine, and the Intermountain Power Service Corporation (IPSC) as a mechanic. He built his first home in Delta from the ground up—doing everything from concrete, framing, sheetrock, plumbing, and electrical work. It was in this home that he and his eternal companion raised their family.

Hal was a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a lifelong love for the gospel, and especially a love of teaching and of music. He combined these passions by serving faithfully in numerous callings, including Bishopric counselor, Sunday School teacher and High Priest instructor. His lessons were full of insight and thought and he taught with passion and love for the gospel. Music filled his soul and his mother provided him with the opportunity to learn to play piano as a youth. He loved to play the piano and sing, and he could be found playing the piano and singing church hymns every Sunday morning at home, and playing the piano in Elders Quorum. This was a highlight of his children being able to hear his voice singing and playing music each Sunday morning before church.

In his free time, he loved visiting with his neighbors and spending precious time with his family. He was a great teacher and taught his kids his many talents and skills. He loved to take his children, extended family, and friends boating; especially water skiing, and family vacations; making everlasting memories. He loved telling stories that his children repeat to this day, though none can match his story telling finesse. And he especially loved playing outdoor games and always had a crowd ready to participate.

He is survived by his children: Maxine (Scott) Glazier, Kenneth (Sally) Young, Russell (Lisa) Young, Teresa (Colby) Winsor, Richard (Cheryl) Young, Darla (Micah) Ewart, Robert (Stacey) Young, Linette Mansouri, Bradley Young, and David (Stacy) Young; 45 grandchildren; 65 (and counting) great-grandchildren; and his sister, Emily (Paul) McCollaum. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife: Marie; his parents: Alva and Emily; his brothers: Alva Allen Young Jr, Joe Sharkey Young, and Sidney Leo Young; his grandson: Ty Young; and his great-granddaughter: Sierra Sparr.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, September 5, at 11:30 am, at the Delta LDS Stake Center, 125 White Sage Ave, Delta. A Viewing will be held 9:30-11:00 am, prior to the service. Burial at Delta City Cemetery.
