Janet Williams McDermaid

Janet Williams McDermaid, age 65, passed away on July 25, 2026 at her home in Hinckley, Utah. She was born on June 26, 1961 in Salt Lake City to Mervin G. and Nellie Maurline Bunker Williams. She grew up in Murray, Utah, the youngest of four children. In 1970, her family moved to Delta, Utah. Janet graduated from Delta High School in 1979. She loved sports and played on the Girls Basketball and Volleyball Teams, performed in the A Cappella Choir, and was a member of the Tri-Del Drill Team.

Janet found the love of her life in her high school sweetheart, Todd Ross McDermaid. He gave her a promise ring when she was 16 and an engagement ring the day after she graduated. They were married on January 11, 1980 in the Provo LDS Temple and raised 2 foster children and adopted 3 sisters. Janet and Todd were inseparable for the next 41 years and loved doing many of the same activities. They first made their home in Oasis, Utah, but they soon moved to Provo in 1982 so Janet could assist her dad in his bagel shop, Golden West Bagels. She enjoyed working with her father, but after a few years, Todd’s job took the couple to St. George and there she began her career as a florist. In 1991, they decided to move back to Hinckley, where Janet opened her own florist shop, Rose Petal Florist. She was back working with her dad again. They were quite a team! Janet had a special gift for arranging flowers. During the last few years she worked at Kousins Floral.

Janet loved having fun with her family and friends. She liked people and enjoyed working in her community. She was a cook for a boys school. She loved to bake desserts and all kinds of breads, but sugar cookies were her favorite! She went to school to be an EMT and drove into Delta several days a week to be on call. She participated with Todd in the Smash Up Derbies and she won several of them. She could take apart an engine and put it back together as well as anyone. She was a handywoman of all sorts. If she didn't know how to do something she found out how to do it!

Janet loved being active. She played baseball but really excelled at volleyball. She would travel long distances weekly to play, and loved the thrill of the tournaments. She loved boating and water skiing, and enjoyed riding dune buggies at the sand dunes. Because of her health, she lost both of her feet, but she did not let that slow her down. She got around on prosthetic legs instead of a wheelchair. She never complained about hardships.

She served in many different callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but her favorite was leader for the girls camp. Janet was full of talents, as she demonstrated in quiltmaking. How she loved to tie quilts! She will be remembered as “the fun aunt,” organizing fabulous parties for everyone. She was always full of laughter, spunk and fun. She and Todd always had little pug dogs to keep them company. Her latest, Nubs, will miss her deeply as we all will!

Janet is survived by her foster daughter: Angel DeClay, of Mesa, Arizona; foster son: Dan (Shelbie) Ropte, of Iowa; daughters: Jennifer, Crystal, and Sarah; sister: Lori Peterson, of Mesquite, Nevada; brother: Wayne (Melayne) Williams, of Payson, Utah; sister: Joyce (Matt) Carmack, of Ashby, Massachusetts; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband: Todd McDermaid; and by her parents: Mervin and Maurline Williams.

A Graveside Memorial Service were held on Friday, September 4, at 11:00 am, at the Oasis Cemetery, where her ashes were laid to rest next to her beloved husband, Todd.
