Guillermo Antonio Ortigoza, age 80, “Tony”, as he was most known, has gone to his reward in heaven. He passed away on September 10, 2026 in Delta, Utah. His passing closes the life of a good man. Funny at times, serious when needed, caring and loving to all he met.
Some people make a great flash with their life, like a Supernova exploding in the cosmos, making it’s own statement. Others go on through life steadily doing good or bad, and life notices them in passing. There is another type, a type less noticed but perhaps, the one who may, in the long haul, be remembered most fondly. Tony was, in my opinion one of these. Delta has lost a part of it’s character and charm with his passing.
Tony was born on November 4, 1945 in Venezuela to a single mother. Though she did her best, it was a challenge for him to grow up with that distinction attached to his name. Perhaps as societies continue to evolve, that will no longer be a problem for the child.
As a young man, he received a scholarship to study in America. After learning his scholarship only covered his tuition, but determined to gain an education, he first resorted to sleeping in his car. Eventually someone offered him $10 to mow their lawn. He built that opportunity up into a thriving landscaping business. He finished his schooling and found he was making such good money that he never used the major he went to school for.
He brought his mother up from Venezuela and cared for her until her death. He was a devoted son and very loving and caring for her. Tony’s family life was difficult. He had been married and later divorced, and is the father of two daughters.
Tony lived in Salt Lake City, before eventually arriving in Delta, where he retired. Tony made a fulfilling life in Delta. He lived in the Sands Apartments and made good friends of many of his neighbors. He was a faithful attending member of the Delta 4th Ward LDS Church. In 2023, Tony was able to take the Oath and become a citizen of the United States. Tony was well known and loved by the people in town. Tony had the Latino way. He would boldly walk up to an attractive woman, and tell her that he thought she was beautiful. He always meant it as a sincere simple observation, and after the initial pause to assess the lack of ulterior motive, often she and Tony were soon chatting and laughing together. As his health worsened and he spent more time in hospital, it seemed that every nurse on the floor had Tony-itus.
Tony had several problems that showed up after Covid. In 2024, he suffered a heart attack and after that his health took a turn for the worse. In late August-early September, he was hospitalized and then sent home with days to a month left to live. He lasted about 2 weeks. Though we will miss him deeply, he was ready to go, happy even. He was looking forward to greeting his family, especially his mother, in the next life.
We all will miss him. Getting to know Tony has enriched our lives. Hope to see you again. Vaya con Dios mis Hermano.
