Douglas Leo Boyd, age 73, passed away on December 15, 2025 due to early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Doug was surrounded by his loving family in South Jordan, Utah.
Douglas is survived by his devoted wife: Lieuwen “Lieu Lieu” Boyd, as he affectionately called her; his children: Derrick (Kami) Boyd, Kinder (Jarell) Giron, Alex (Amber) Boyd, Nick (Alli) Boyd, and Hayley (Aelias) McHam; his cherished grandchildren: Madison, Ella, Dallas, Scarlette, Aaliyah, Camden, Easton, Sidney, London, Ava, Alice, Baylee, Thatcher, Arlo, Annalise, Hudson, and Nyah. He is also survived by his siblings: Jeff Boyd; Marjory (Robb) Lamothe; Ken Robb; Daniel Robb; and Darryl Robb. Doug was preceded in death by his parents: Donald Leo Boyd (Nell) and Joyce Adele Hammrick Knight; and his brother: Christopher Boyd.
Doug was born on November 19, 1952, in Washington, DC, the oldest of seven children. He was raised primarily in Wheaton, Maryland, where his adventurous spirit took root early in life. He fondly referred to his younger self as a “sewer rat of America”, recalling childhood days spent exploring storm drains with his brother, Jeff, and neighborhood friends. Curious, mischievous, and endlessly inventive, Doug had a lifelong habit of taking things apart and putting them back together—skills that later earned him a reputation as a true “MacGyver,” able to fix just about anything.
Following his graduation from Wheaton High School, Doug attended Montgomery Community College and embraced the free-spirited, hitchhiking lifestyle of the 1970s. His travels eventually led him to Vero Beach, Florida, where he settled to help care for his beloved grandmother, Gigi. It was there that Doug became a firefighter, a profession he deeply loved and took pride in. During this time, he met the Latter Day Saint sister missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, joined the Church, and served faithfully throughout his life. With characteristic humor, Doug often said he “married his missionary,” Sister Lieuwen Steele.
Doug and Lieuwen were married on February 9, 1979 and sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple. Feeling inspired to return to Maryland, Doug went back to help his father with the family plastering business, D. L. Boyd, Inc., founded by his grandfather in 1930. He graduated from the University of Maryland in the 1980s, and together Doug and Lieu raised their five children in Crofton, Maryland, where they lived for 40 years. Doug worked side by side with his father to grow the family business, later welcoming his son Derrick into the company. Derrick assumed ownership when Doug was too ill to operate the business in 2020.
Doug was always a big kid at heart and made everything fun especially for his grandkids! Above all, Doug loved helping others. Whether it was fixing something, lending a hand, or offering support, he gave of himself freely and wholeheartedly. He loved deeply, served faithfully, and lived adventurously. His legacy lives on through his family, his faith, and the many lives he touched.
Douglas Leo Boyd will be laid to rest in the Sutherland, Utah Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held in Maryland on January 3, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. (EST), at the LDS Chapel, 16621 Sylvan Drive, Bowie, Maryland.
