Roma LaVee Broderick Thomas

RomaThomas2.webRoma LaVee Broderick Thomas passed away May 20, 2022 in Santaquin, Utah at the age of 90. She was born to Cloy L and Anna Mortensen Broderick on August 9, 1931 in Emery, Utah. Roma spent her childhood in Eureka and Delta, and cherished her memories of growing up with her siblings and cousins. She mentioned playing games in the street like Run Sheepie Run, Kick the Can and others. Her family loved being at Fishlake and enjoyed many, many camping trips there, fishing for hours. Growing up during the Great Depression taught her to be frugal and make the most of everything, a trait she carried on throughout her life.

On December 3, 1948, she married Jack Louis Thomas. They reminisced about that winter being the “Winter of ‘48" where snow drifted as high as 10 feet. They lived on the Mortensen Ranch for the first years of their marriage, enjoying being close to family. Shortly after, they moved to Burbank, Utah, where dad worked for the Dearden Ranch. Again, they were happy wherever they were together, and told stories of those much loved years. From there, they moved to Deseret where Dad worked for Linc Cropper and the children started to arrive. Children: Jackie, Shannon and Kim completed their family and were blessed to be born to such loving parents.

In 1962, Dad was hired by Beryllium Resources and began the job that would see him through to retirement. The mine at Topaz was a favorite place for the whole family on the weekends and during the summer, spending many happy hours  together in the peaceful desert. Mom went on to serve as cook for the miners, a job she likes to remember Dad telling her would last just 1 week, and continued for 12 years. Anyone who was lucky enough to eat mom’s cooking can see why it ended up being a longer stint than originally planned. She loved the time spent there with Dad.

Mom was a happy, optimistic, hardworking person with strong pioneer roots. She thought nothing of working side by side with Dad on their many complicated projects. Building outbuildings for animals, pouring cement with the family, oversight of remodeling a home and large building to become rental units, total remodel of their home and providing hours of tending for grandchildren. All done with a happy attitude while demonstrating unconditional love. She was thought of as a second mom to several siblings and nieces and nephews. She always had time for everyone. Mom loved to travel and went on many cruises with sisters-in-law and friends. She and Dad enjoyed several excursions as well. For several years. Mom was in charge of the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Delta. Her untiring efforts helped to raise tens of thousands of dollars for a cause she so deeply believed in. Also contributed her fund rasing talents to support the Friends of the NRA, Again, a tireless leader.

Her husband, children, grandchildren and extended family loved her dearly for her unjudgmental love for everyone. Tributes have come through since her death that attest to that fact. She loved all holidays and helped make many lasting memories for everyone.

Mom was very independent, never seemed afraid of anything. After Dad passed in 2009, she was happy at home, enjoying reading, continued camping with family and helping Jackie’s family with their catering business and cooking for their childcare center. She lived there until she turned 90, when a large family birthday party was held for her in her beautiful yard. Shortly after, she moved to a lovely assisted living facility in Santaquin where Shannon lived called the Seasons of Santaquin. It is a  beautiful, warm, caring place where she spent her final days, still with family visiting almost daily. We thank Richard Porter and his staff for the exceptional loving care they gave Mom.

Roma is survived by her children: Jackie (Craig) Nielson, Shannon (Bob) Price and Kim (Leslie) Thomas; brothers: Don, Reid and Dennis Broderick; 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews she loved like her own. Preceded in death by her husband: Jack; brother: Ron Broderick; sister: Lenore Bunker.

Funeral: Wednesday, May 25, 11:00am, at Delta Third Ward LDS Chapel. Viewing: 9:30-10:40am, prior to service. Friends unable to attend are invited to view the recorded video of the Service. Burial in the Delta City Cemetery.
