Steven Myles Shiner

Steve wasn’t a cliche and neither will his obituary be. Trying to describe all that he was and express my love and gratitude for him, is the hardest thing I have ever had to do. As his wife, I’m heart broken at the loss of my husband, but I am grateful to share his story with you.

He was the love of my life, 44-years of marriage and a 50-year courtship. He was my best friend, and I will always cherish our many adventures. He was my rock, tirelessly supporting my endeavors; and encouraging me to pursue my goals. Not only was he my rock, but my children’s, our extended family’s, and those who came to know his tender kindness.

Steven Myles Shiner was born on August 22, 1960 in Vernal, Utah to Myles and Mary Harkness Murray. As an infant, he unfortunately lost his biological father in an airplane accident. His mother later married Vard Shiner, who then adopted Steve, and raised him as his own.

As a young boy, he developed a love and passion for sports, hunting, fishing, music, and family. He also grew an incredible sense of humor, which many came to know. He spent several of his childhood years living in Dutch John near Flaming Gorge in Utah. He cherished those years, and entertained the desire of returning there. It became a favorite family vacation spot.

He moved to Richfield, Utah, and he and I first met in sixth grade. We became friends early, and he was my first official date as we attended Richfield High School’s Homecoming dance as Sophomores.

He was everything a girl could love. Not only was he incredibly handsome, but extremely talented. He was the quarterback of the football team, the third-baseman on the baseball team, admirably humble, and so funny. Needless to say, I couldn’t resist falling in love with him.

We married on May 4, 1978. We made our home in Richfield, then Glenwood before moving to Delta, Utah.

He served as the President of the Millard County Credit Union from 1997 until 2020. Many know of him as the local banker, and he established many great relationships between co-workers, members, and throughout the Millard County area during his time there.

Steve’s love for animals sparked an interest in taxidermy. Like many things in his life, he set out determined to learn everything he could about it. For years he would help others preserving their memories with beautiful recreations of their mule deer, elk, ducks, geese, and many more. His meticulous nature ensured his work was performed to perfection. He took great pride in his work.

One of his greatest accomplishments is the restoration of his 1958 Chevrolet pick-up truck, which he named ‘Shirley’. Over the course of several years, many trips to the Rancher Café seeking advice and tutorage from local mechanics, multiple trips to junkyards throughout the state in search of pieces and parts, he built his truck from scratch. It serves as an exact replica of the originals made, and no one was more proud of the feat than him.

It is impossible for me to list all the things he achieved. He became a gunsmith, carpenter, football and baseball coach, and many more. He definitely was a man of many trades, and I can honestly say a master of all.

His sense of humor, and his laugh was contagious. He loved being home, on a lake, or on a mountain surrounded by family, laughing and joking. He loved his family and had a unique relationship with each and every member.

I will always be grateful for his love.
I love you, Steve.

Steven is survived by his wife: Jacquelyn Walters Shiner; mother: Mary Harkness Shortess; brothers: Jeff (Cynthia) Shiner and Todd Shiner; sister: Vicki (Clay) Kone; children: Chessley Shiner, McKell Smith, and Jesse (Sarah) Shiner; grandchildren: Peyton (Devin) Timm, Hayden Smith, Aycee, Oakley, Jeffery, Calab, McKenna, Mason, and Madison Shiner; and great-granddaughter: Baby Girl Timm. He is preceded in death by his fathers: Vard Shiner and Myles Murray; and brother: Mike Murray.

Please join us in remembering him. Funeral: Saturday, May 21, at 11 am, at the Delta 1st Ward Chapel, 222 W. 200 N.
