Brenda Sue Tate Lyman

Brenda Sue Tate Lyman passed away on November 19, 2021 at her home in Silver Reef, Utah. Brenda was born on October 6, 1942 to Dorothy Lee Dodson Tate and George Waite Tate, Jr. in Culver City, California. She spent much of her life living in Southern California, before moving to Southern Utah for the last 20 years of her life.

Brenda spent her life in the service of others and was best known for her unconditional love for everyone she met - and they loved her back in return. She maintained many close lifelong relationships with family and friends who were as close as family. When she married Leo Lyman in 2002, she became the beloved mother to his six children and what would eventually become 16 grandchildren.

Brenda spent her early childhood in southern California and Kentucky. While in Kentucky, Brenda and her sister played outside, catching fireflies, watching piglets play, getting fruit from the orchard, and running up and down hills. They loved watching for their grandfather Luther, with his swinging lunch pail to come into view down the road as he came home from work. In her younger years in California, Brenda was an observant, pretty little brown-eyed girl who always liked playing with friends. Her Aunt Jo in particular was a very important person in her young life. At Azusa High School in California she shared her life with dear friends, marched in parades, liked swimming, and was elected to leadership positions. She enjoyed her high school years and remained close to many classmates throughout her life.

Brenda found great joy in the service of others and loved and was loved by almost everyone she met.  Her hobbies included tai chi, hiking, going to the beach, rescuing animals (especially her cats), and watching the Lakers. She loved Jesus, opera, classical music, the Hollywood Bowl, her plants, animals, mountain and desert scenery and art, her Indian heritage, family and friends. Brenda was a voracious reader. She loved history and enjoyed reading Leo’s work and listening to him speak. She encouraged him in his work.

Brenda was married to Tom Corth for 39 years. They raised Brenda’s brother, Ward. She was dearly loved by a large family in California and Wisconsin.

Brenda married Leo Lyman in 2002 and gained 6 children. The youngest of them was Genna, who was just 5 years old when Brenda became her mother. Their other five were adults, but were loved and taught by Brenda and she was the best grandmother to the grandchildren.

Brenda joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 2004 and was sealed to Leo in the St. George Temple.  She served with the Young Women and as Relief Society President of the Leeds 2nd Ward for five years. She had a deep love for serving the women of the church.

Brenda had an almost universal inclination to like all of the people she came to know, and even when getting older she embraced new technology, music and experiences with frequency.

Brenda Sue is survived by her beloved husband: Leo Lyman; children: Ed (Vicki) Lyman, Rick (Nikki) Lyman, John (Jennifer) Lyman, Laurel Lyman Hanks, Russ (Candace) Lyman, Genna Lyman; 16 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren;  sister: Linda (Neil) Raye Tate Richardson (Tate, Laura); brother: Ward (Monica) Tate, former husband Tom Corth; and many beloved nieces and nephews, cousins and dear friends who were as close as family. She is preceded in death by her parents: Dorothy Lee Tate Vaughan, and George Waite Tate Jr.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 27, at 11:00 am, in the Leeds 2nd ward LDS Chapel, 75 N. Main St. Leeds, UT. A Viewing will be held, 9:30-10:40 am, prior the the service.
