Mary Josephine Childress Church

MaryJoChurch2.webMary Josephine “Jo” Childress Church, age 93, of Delta, Utah peacefully returned home on Saturday,  December 28, 2019. She was born on February 15, 1926 in Richmond, Virginia to Walter Linwood and Rosa Lee Hart Childress. She was raised in Richmond, VA and attended area schools. As a girl she was active in the Girl Scout program and loved spending time with friends on the beach, which she loved.

She met Howard James Church in Virginia while he was stationed in the armed forces. They were married in Richmond on September 8, 1950. They moved to Tooele, Utah in 1951 where Howard worked at the Tooele Army Depot. They moved several times throughout the Salt Lake Valley before settling in Delta, Utah in 1974.

Helping to support their seven children, Jo did many things including being an auto mechanics assistant, a teacher’s aide, seamstress, and in home daycare, as well as ironing and laundry for others. She had many talents and abilities, she loved bowling, bingo, bunco, embroidery, gardening, baking, and was  a very good cook. She also enjoyed fishing, camping and watching the Utah Jazz. Her spunky, engaging personality made her friends with everyone she met.

Her personal strength, sacrifice and love for her family was inspiring. Her children each have cherished memories of her selflessness. She tirelessly worked to provide for their needs. There are no words to express their deep gratitude for all that she sacrificed. Despite any challenge she courageously worked hard and did what had to be done.

She is preceded in death by her parents: Walter Linwood and Rosa Lee Hart Childress; her husband: Howard James Church; her son: Craig Walter Church; her sister: Catherine A. Childress; her brother: Walter Linwood Childress and her grandson: Hayden Robert Church. She is survived by her children: Catherine Church, Tooele, Utah; Linda (Scott) Stanworth, Delta, Utah; Diane (Ed) Potts, Wittman Arizona; Jim (Tracey) Church, Delta, Utah; Michelle (Wesley) Roper, Delta, Utah; and Thayne (Kim) Church, Spring Creek, Nevada. She has 32 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.
