Jeri Lee Hale Owens

JeriOwens2.webJeri Lee Hale Owens, age 73, passed away November 18, 2016 at her home in Oak City, Utah. She was born on August 31, 1943 in Tooele, Utah, the fourth of five children born to Nathan Leonard and Myrta Margie Davis Hale. She grew up working hard and riding horses on her family’s ranch in Trout Creek in the West Desert of Utah. She attended school in Trout Creek until the 8th grade. She attended Delta High School, working many jobs to support herself while she was away from home. She graduated in 1961. Later that year, she married Tony Clark, and they settled in Sugarville and had three daughters together. Jeri and Tony later divorced.

Jeri moved to Orem where she worked as a sales clerk at JC Penny’s. Some years later Jeri rekindled her acquaintance with her high school friend, Bennett E Owens. They were married on December 26, 2013 in Oak City, and were later sealed in the Manti LDS Temple. From the beginning, she made her step-children feel welcomed and important.

Jeri loved making cakes, riding horses, hiking in the mountains, reading, and most of all spending time with her kids and grandkids. She was a writer of children’s fiction, focusing on her experiences growing up in the West Desert. She was volunteered many years for the American Red Cross. She was a member of LDS Church and had a strong testimony of the Savior. She said one of her greatest experiences was being sealed in the temple. She was a great listener, a hard worker, and a strong, capable woman. She taught her children the importance of having a good education to lean on during difficult times.

Jeri is survived by her husband: Ben Owens, Oak City; daughters: Diana (Mark) McGill, Stagecoach, Texas; Suzanne (Dan) Caussey, Saratoga Springs; Linda Lee (Mark) Shipley, Oak City; step-children: Jennifer (Mark) Elmont, Mapleton; Brandon (Angie) Owens, Mapleton; 21 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; siblings: Terry Hale, Mississippi; Margie (Randy) Quarnberg, Tooele; brother-in-law: Gayle Bennett, Hinckley; step-sister: Jacqueline Davis, California. She was preceded in death by her sisters: Natalie Bennett and Rosalyn Hale.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 23, 11:00 AM, at the Oak City LDS Chapel, 35 East Center St. Viewings will be held Tuesday, 6-8 PM, at Nickle Mortuary, 190 S Center St, Delta; and Wednesday, 9:30-10:40 AM, prior to the service. Burial will be in the Oak City Cemetery.
